Thermographic Imagers

What types of IR cameras can be used?

Factors to consider?

Often people buy an infrared camera that is not matched to their needs. The features to consider when purchasing an IR camera are intended use, portability, ergonomics, front and back-end electronics, software compatibility, expandability, ruggedness, technical support, training and finally…cost. The detector needs to match the intended use.

The three main detector specifications are:

Type and Wavelength

Is the detector cooled or uncooled?

What type of detector materials?

Whatwavelength will be required?

Thermal Sensitivity

Is the detector sensitive enough to see the slight differences in temperature

sometimes needed for given application?

Spatial Resolution

Does the detector have enough pixels to make the picture I need?

How much signal degradation will I get from using a wider or longer lens?
